Organized people love lists and planners. From sticky notes to dry erase boards, wall calendars to day planners, if you want to stay organized, write it down. Set goals. People with mad organizational skills set goals and keep them. How? They set S.M.A.R.T. goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound). Here’s a great example: Instead of setting a goal to be more organized in the New Year, set a specific goal. Goal: I will make my bed every morning except Saturday. Goal: I will fold laundry every Wednesday after yoga. Embrace minimalism. Minimalism isn’t about doing without. It’s about living with less – less debt, less stuff, less stress. You don’t have to empty your home, but it is a mindset that helps you question whether or not you need to buy something, keep something, or store something for “just in case.” Embrace imperfection. Moving forward is key, not moving forward perfectly. Don’t get hung up on the achieving perfection; satisfy yourself with the baby steps you take toward it. Fall in love with containers. One of the biggest secrets to staying organized is to have a place for stuff. When you don’t have a place for stuff, everything feels cluttered. So fall in love with containers. If there is no existing space for something, buy or repurpose a container to store it. From glass jars in the bathroom for cotton balls and swabs to bins to store your shoes, you can use containers to organize your stuff and your life. Nike your life. Just do it, that is. Don’t leave dishes in the sink until later; just put them in the dishwasher now. Don’t walk out of the bedroom thinking you’ll come back to make the bed; just make it when you get up. Don’t leave the curling iron on the counter with a pile of makeup. Put it away as you use it. Plan. Whether you’re hosting the holidays or headed on vacation, plan ahead. Make lists, buy groceries, set itineraries, and do as much as you can ahead of time. Ask for help. The most organized people aren’t afraid to ask for help. If you’re struggling to get more organized, get in touch!
