For each unit or preschool theme, I think it’s important to include activities for multiple subject areas like art and crafts, literacy, math, music, science, and sensory play.

Young children learn best through meaningful experiences and PLAY, so of course I encourage you to keep that in mind when you’re planning! These math-based St. Patrick’s Day activities are playful, engaging, and hands-on so the kids will have fun while they’re learning!

St. Patrick’s Day Math

Since St. Patrick’s Day is coming up, I compiled selection of math activities that will fit a St. Paddy’s Day theme. The list is broken down into three sections, in case you’re looking for something specific: shamrocks, rainbows, and the ever-elusive gold coins!

Check them out! Then, make sure to comment below which of them you’re most excited to try with your preschoolers this March.

Shamrock Math

Let’s begin with some math activities using shamrocks! (Did you know all shamrocks are clovers but not all clovers are shamrocks?)

Have your students work together to spot the lucky clovers as they play a shamrock math race! This is a great activity to let the kids move around the classroom as they play and learn.

Let the kids create patterns and practice their fine motor skills with our beaded shamrock craft. In my opinion, this is one you definitely need to include when planning your St. Patrick’s Day math.

Use the tweezers in our shamrock sensory bin to practice sorting. Then, write numbers in the compartments of the shamrock mold using a dry erase marker. Finally, have the students place the correct amount of manipulatives in each space.

Practice early math and literacy skills with the 5 Little Shamrock rhyming words and puppets. Read the poem at circle time and let the students each have turns holding up their number puppet at the appropriate time during the poem.

Students practice the early math skills of counting, recording data, and graphing as they roll dice to create a shamrock graph!

The shamrock number line scavenger hunt is a really great activity for practicing number order. Children find and place the shamrocks in order independently. Or, better yet, let the whole class search for their very own lucky number and then have them work together to line up in the correct order.

Rainbow Math

Next, let’s focus on some of the more colorful St. Patrick’s Day math activities with a rainbows theme!

Make a set of our rainbow rocks to explore shapes and colors. You can also compare and contrast the sizes of the rocks, putting them in order from smallest to largest. Or use them as a tool for measuring! For example, the giant shamrock might be ten rainbow rocks long.

Try out a rainbow math activity using our DIY rainbow abacus! Kids practice counting, fine motor skills, and color identification!

Kids practice sorting and color identification and get their sensory needs met with our rainbow sensory bin! Tie in a literacy component to the St. Patrick’s Day math by adding the book Bear Sees Colors.

Students can use the rainbow counting beads activity to practice recognizing numbers, counting, and one-to-one correspondence. They can also practice putting the beads in the color order of the rainbow!

Kids race to the end of the line as they practice counting and graphing with the free rainbow train counting game!

The rainbow play dough color and counting game is such a great sensory activity where the kids will count buttons and place them on the rainbow based on color. This one looks like so much fun!

The children will love practicing their fine motor skills as they count their way to the pot of gold (candy!) at the end of their rainbow counting activity.

You can use counting bears, or any other manipulatives that you have in assorted colors, with the rainbow color sorting activity.

Math with Gold Coins

And, finally, you’ll find some real treasures with these gold coin St. Patrick’s Day math ideas.

The children find their very own pot of gold at the bottom of our rainbow yarn sensory bin! It comes with a free printable set of gold coin 10-frames for the kids, too.

Students race to see who can fill up the pot of gold the quickest in the roll and color St. Patrick’s Day math game.

Combination of gold coins and shamrock printables make for a really fun and simple St. Patrick’s Day math activity.

Create a gold coin memory matching game for your students to play. There are also lot of other ways to put the numbered gold coins to use in the classroom!

Instead of focusing on letters, let the children explore numbers or shapes in our gold coin and rainbow sensory bin.

The kids are going to absolutely love practicing addition in a new and hands on way in the addition game with gold coins!

Those mischievous leprechauns have been at it again, hiding all of the gold coins! Let the kids participate in a game of gold coin hide-and-seek. Then, they can count to see who found the most.
