Portland Kids Weekend Events: Jan. 14-16

This weekend is an important weekend filled with family activities that allow your crew to make a real difference. You can celebrate Martin Luther King Day weekend, by attending events that include acts of service (think planting trees) and remembrance. Opening Vigil MLK Celebration

Start off the weekend of MLK remembrance early by heading to the University of Portland for an introductory celebration of a weekend of festivities! UP will be hosting an opening vigil featuring candle lightings, musical performances and student readings. This year, the university is inviting you to join in their theme of “(Re)Claiming Black Joy)” and involve yourself and the family in honoring MLK’s civil rights accomplishments. Maybe your MLK weekend is a bit busier than you thought, and perhaps Friday and Sunday are out of the question. Never fear! Solve Oregon has several clean-up volunteer opportunities for you and the kiddos to get outside and get involved with. Restore Terwilliger Blvd Forest

Anyone who lives in Portland can agree that the trees are what makes the city shine. Why not give back a little and plant one of your own? There’s nothing better than knowing a tree you’ve helped plant is growing happily in Forest park on in the SW hills. So keep Saturday, January 15th clear from sports practices and brunch with the gals, and round the family up for a day of restoring Portland’s urban forest! HandsOn will be managing a volunteer tree planting event on Terwilliger boulevard in honor of MLK and his legacy, and what better way to be involved than getting some fresh air and sticking your hands in the dirt?
