It was a monumental day on Sunday as beloved pundit Pat Spillane hung up his mic after three decades in the job.
While the Irish public were brimming with pride as they watched the icon of GAA bid farewell, no one was more proud than his daughter, Cara.
Cara shared a picture of herself and her father in the commentary box on Sunday with the simple caption: “Out. The. Gap. So proud.”
Football fans were quick to comment on his retirement with one writing: “True legend, enjoy your retirement, Pat.”
“Lovely words from your Dad today and a great way to sign off his Sunday Game career. Congratulations to Kerry!” another wrote.
“Very emotional speech, he left on a great note, well done Pat, great bit of stuff on the field & in the commentary box,” a third commented.
During his farewell, Pat was moved to tears as he discussed Kerry’s win against Galway.
“Just from a personal point of view…In 1964, my father was a selector for Kerry against Galway. The night before the game, he had pains in his chest. He wouldn’t go to the doctor,” he said.
“Went to the game the following day as a selector, and was dead on Tuesday. And Kerry/Galway matches to me, always bring back this memory.”
Pat’s nephews Killian and Adrian Spillane were part of the Kerry squad, picking up the first senior medals for the first time since 2014.
“My father never saw us play, the three sons. And today the three sons have 19 All-Ireland medals. And his two grandsons, Killian and Adrian, have two more,” Pat continued.
“He would have been a proud man. 21 All-Ireland senior football medals in his house. It’s just a special day. It means a lot. They are good lads.”
We’ll certainly miss you, Pat.
