Hey everyone, welcome to Learningworks for Kids Game Spotlights! This is a new series where we will be walking through some of your favorite games and talking about how playing them can help you get better at real-world skills!
Grab your golden feathers, pocket some seashells, and glide on over to the relaxing indie game A Short Hike. We’re going to be talking about this cozy game’s mechanics as well as how you can use executive functioning skills to make sure that your short hike has some long-lasting benefits.
In the game, you play as Claire, a young bird who is visiting her Aunt who is a park ranger on a beautiful mountain. Claire is waiting for an important phone call but cannot get any reception at the base of the mountain. Her aunt suggests that she take a hike to the top of the mountain where she can get her phone call and enjoy the sights as well. The game follows Claire as she makes her way up to the peak of the mountain and meets some new faces along the way.
In order to get to the top of the mountain, Claire will need to jump, climb, and glide her way from one area of the mountain to another. To do this, she will need to collect coins to purchase golden feathers which increase her stamina and allow her to perform more complex maneuvers. Certain coins and treasure chests are not easily accessible until Claire obtains more stamina so you will need to use your working memory to recall where these items are located so that you can go back for them later. You will also need to use your planning skills to make sure you have enough money to purchase all the golden feathers you can…you’re going to need all that stamina to make it to the top of the mountain!
If you want to play a relaxed game about a bird who just wants to make a phone call but ends up finding more along the way, A Short Hike is definitely worth a try!
