Many students may not even realize they are skip counting when scoring for games like basketball and football.

Children become increasingly strong mathematician when using skip counting for basic tasks, for example, telling time and dealing with money. Skip counting is also essential as it lays a mathematical foundation for multiplication and division problems. Learning this skill and committing it to their tool box of mental math tricks during the primary grades, allows for a more positive math experiences in the intermediate grades and as a primary teacher, providing this "little skill" is actually a very import one!

An Introductory Lesson to Skip Counting
* Give your students a hundred chart, or based on your district's standards, a 120 chart. I have both of these charts available for you as a freebie on TpT. Click here is you need it.
* Allow time for partners to fill out their charts together, or whole table groups. Allow them to build from each other's previous knowledge of counting to 100.
* Next, project one of the charts to your board, either a completely blank one, or if pressed for time, one that is partially filled out. Call students up to the board or your document camera area to fill out the chart for you.

Praise and congratulations ~ let them know when it is done that they have reviewed and mastered counting by ones. But next is a real challenge and are they up for "harder math?" "3rd grade math?" "adult math?" any term you would like to use to build enthusiasm and keep them engaged. Most boys and girls will cheer when you tell them it is too hard for them, {wink, wink} but continue to teach it and they master something you told them would be oh... sooooo... hard. :)

* Continuing - Let the students select one crayon, only one color, then guide them with your hundred chart on the board to color all the even numbers, using this lesson to review EVEN numbers....  discuss that counting by two is the same as coloring in all the even numbers. Have them take a random line and count / clap on the evens. For example, 11 CLAP 13 CLAP 15 CLAP 17 CLAP, etc. Review counting by 2s a few more times with different random lines.

* Now using the same chart but a different color, color in all the Counting by 5s numbers. Let the students discover that 10, 20, 30, etc. will now be colored twice and then explain that those numbers will appear both when you are counting by 2s and counting by 5s.
* This becomes a terrific transition when doing the last set, counting by 10s. ALL of the 10s will already be filled in on their charts.

{If you are limited in your teaching time, this freebie has the numbers already filled in for your students, just print and you are ready to start at the third step of this lesson.}

To Continuing the Lesson on Skip Counting
* Next practice counting by 1s, 5s and 10s in isolation. Show the students that not only can they count on by different amounts, they can also starting counting with different numbers.

Here are some examples if you need a jump start.
Count by ones.
1. 1, 2, 3, ___, ___, ___
2. 35, 36, 37, ___, ___, ___

Count by fives.

2. 40, 50, 60, ___, ___, ___

* Next practice counting by 1s, 5s and 10s in the middle of a counting pattern.

Here are some more counting by examples if you need a jump start.

Lesson Plans for Counting By Counting By Fives, Counting By Tens, and Counting By 100s.s,
Another great whole group lessons for Counting By Five and Counting By Ten.

* Line up ten children at the front of the room with their arms out, palms facing the rest of the students. Quickly discuss that each hand has five fingers and that you DO NOT need to count each finger, each time, you know it will be five now, five later, five tomorrow, etc. You tap each hand with your hand or a teacher pointer and count, 5, 10, 15, 20, etc. with each tap. Repeat with the students counting along with you. Repeat with a student helper tapping the hands this time. Rotate out your students so that every student has many turns. My students use to love this simple activity.

* Next, start small with five students or again with ten students at the front of the classroom. Have your students place their own hands together with interlocking fingers, so that each student has ONE GROUP of fingers in their interlocked hands. Quick review that each child has TEN FINGERS and that number will not change, etc. Then count by TENS as you tap each child, repeat, repeat, repeat! This little activity is also terrific at dismissal or if everyone is lined up ready for the music teacher, but her door is not open.... just a cute, quick time filler!
Enjoy! :)

When you are done with your lessons, I have some great resources for small group time, assessments, centers, seat work or even a spiral review later when you move to chapter two, Numbers to 1,000.

There are many ways to use this Counting Patterns Within 100 Center Games Resource, here are a few of my favorite ways:

  • Use one page as a game board, cut the other page. Place all those cards face down. Have the students turn over one card at a time, solve and place face up on the board. If they are incorrect, the card returns to the bottom of the pile. The winner is the student who places the final card. OR, for a "no winner" version, the goal is for the students to solve the cards independently, but to completely cover the board together. This version can ALSO be played two ways. One way is with the answer page as the game board, another way is with the math problem page as the game board instead.
  • You can also play this game with cutting all the cards and matching up the problems with the solutions.
  • For movement, place the problem cards around the room and the student(s) have to solve the math problem and leave the correct answer card at that location. Have a second student check the answers to extend the game.
  • Mix all the cards together, with two students, deal 5 cards to each student and then place the remaining cards face down. Use as a Go Fish card game!
  • Lay all the cards upside down on the floor and use as a Concentration (some call it Memory) Game!

When you are done with these task cards, place them inside your folder and store them away with all of your chapter one math items, in a file cabinet, plastic container, this folder method works with any method you use for storage for each year. In the above picture, I've used the center games' cover sheet and attached it to a simple two pocket folder.  This way you can quickly and easily prop it up anywhere in your room to become a math center. One way to play the game is to have all the cards cut out and match the problem card to the answer card. Matching stickers on the back can very easily create a self checking center too.

Another way to play the game is to cut out all the answer cards and leave the problem cards as a single sheet, a single game board that students then solve. You can also create it in a vise-versa way, all the answer cards remain as is from the printer, using it as a game board and the problem cards are cut out to use to match to the game board. Place all three ways at your center to allow students multiple ways to play while they are at that center. Laminate your favorite way or all three ways to play for a longer life of your center.

When I first introduce Color By Numbers / Color By Codes to my students, I model a few on the document camera during the first week of school. This is especially important for a review of colors and reading the color words. I teach them to line up the crayon to the color word on the paper. Once they know it is PINK and not another "p word" for example PURPLE, I have them circle the word in the "Color By Code" box so that they can complete the worksheet independently when I'm at Small Groups later in the school year.
